Hygienic Cosmetic Pumps

Hygienic Cosmetic Pumps for Precise and Efficient Product Transfer

The cosmetic industry relies on high-quality, hygienic pump systems to transfer a wide range of beauty and personal care products, from light oils and fragrances to thick creams and gels. These substances vary significantly in viscosity, requiring specialised pumps that ensure gentle handling, precise dosing, and compliance with industry hygiene standards.

At North Ridge Pumps we supply and manufacture a comprehensive range of cosmetic pumps designed to meet the needs of manufacturers, ensuring efficiency, minimal wastage, and product integrity.

  • Polished internal surfaces to prevent contamination and bacterial growth.

  • Easy disassembly for fast and thorough cleaning between batches.

2. Reversible Operation

  • Bi-directional flow capability allows for product recovery from hoses and long discharge lines.

  • Reduces product loss, ensuring maximum yield from each batch.

3. Minimal Wastage

4. Handling of Various Viscosities

  • Our pumps can handle everything from low-viscosity liquids (such as perfumes and oils) to high-viscosity creams and gels.

  • Suitable for shear-sensitive products, maintaining the consistency and quality of formulations.

5. Precision Batching & Dosing

  • Accurate and repeatable dosing, ensuring consistency in container filling, ingredient blending, and recipe batching.

  • Can be automatically adjusted to accommodate different viscosities without recalibration.

  • Removes the need for manual weighing, saving time and improving accuracy.

6. ATEX-Rated for Flammable Liquids

  • Pumps available with ATEX certification for handling alcohol-based formulations, solvents, and fragrances in hazardous environments.

  • Suitable for flammable cosmetic ingredients used in perfumes, aerosol sprays, and haircare products.

Types of Pumps Used in the Cosmetic Industry

Different applications require different pump types, depending on factors such as viscosity, sensitivity, and hygiene requirements. Below is an overview of the most commonly used pumps:

1. Peristaltic Pumps

✔ Best for: Dosing applications, high-purity cosmetic products, shear-sensitive liquids.
✔ Common Uses: Fragrances, essential oils, liquid soaps, and serum transfer.

Pros:

  • Gentle on product – prevents foaming and shear damage.

  • High accuracy – ideal for precision dosing.

  • Self-priming – handles viscous and non-viscous liquids.

  • Minimal contamination risk – liquid only contacts the tubing, making it highly hygienic.

  • Easy to Use / Maintain– Without technical training or specialist mechanical knowledge

Cons:

  • Tubing wear – requires periodic replacement.

  • Limited flow rates – may not be suitable for high-volume transfers.

  • Pulsating flow- require pulsation dampener if this is an issue

2. Progressive Cavity Pumps

✔ Best for: High-viscosity creams, gels, pastes, and lotions.
✔ Common Uses: Lip balms, mascaras, moisturisers, and thick serums.

Pros:

  • Handles high-viscosity liquids without clogging.

  • Smooth, pulsation-free flow – prevents aeration and product degradation.

  • Accurate metering for batch processing.

Cons:

  • Maintenance is more difficult and time consuming to undertake.

3. Lobe Pumps

✔ Best for: Viscous and shear-sensitive liquids.
✔ Common Uses: Creams, lotions, body butters, and gel-based products.

Pros:

  • Hygienic and easy to clean – ideal for sensitive products.

  • Gentle product handling – preserves consistency and texture.

  • Highly efficient for thick materials.

Cons:

  • More expensive than other pump types due to timing gear / gearbox design.

  • May require priming before operation.

4. Centrifugal Pumps

✔ Best for: High-flow, low-viscosity applications.
✔ Common Uses: Water-based products, perfumes, alcohols, and toners.

Pros:

  • High flow rates – ideal for bulk transfer.

  • Simple design – fewer components, reducing maintenance.

  • Cost-effective for large-scale applications.

Cons:

  • Not suitable for thick or viscous products.

  • Can cause shear stress – may alter product consistency.

5. Diaphragm Pumps (AODD)

✔ Best for: Thick creams, gels, and volatile liquids.
✔ Common Uses: Perfumes, serums, and heavy creams.

Pros:

  • Can run dry without damage.

  • Handles abrasive or solid-laden liquids.

  • ATEX versions available for flammable ingredients.

Cons:

  •  Pulsating flow may not be ideal for smooth product transfer.

  • Higher air consumption if using an air-operated model.

6. Twin Screw Pumps

Twin Screw Pumps such as the HTS Series are an ideal solution for cosmetic pumping applications.

✔ Best for: Shear-sensitive, high-viscosity, and multi-phase liquids.

✔ Common Uses: Creams, gels, serums, shampoos, conditioners, and emulsions.

Pros:

  • Ultra-hygienic design – suitable for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.

  • Handles both high and low viscosities – versatile across multiple product types.

  • Self-priming and reversible – allows complete product recovery and minimal wastage.

  • Smooth, pulsation-free flow – prevents aeration and maintains product integrity.

  • Easy to clean (CIP/SIP compatible) – reducing downtime between batches.

Cons:

  • Higher initial investment compared to other pump types.

  • More complex installation – requires precise setup with a VFD for optimal performance.

  • Unsuitable for abrasive fluids which cause accelerated wear
