Sludge is typically a waste fluid with high solid content taken from the process which may have involved flocculation or separation from another process. Sludge, also known as cake, is often toxic, highly viscous, dewatered and can be very abrasive as it typically contains waste particles from another process which have accumulated at the bottom of tanks.

Sludge pumps and the term slurry pumping are sometimes used in place of each other but the processes are quite different as slurry is generally regarded as having a high water content which can be pumped utilising centrifugal technology. The cake is often much thicker meaning only a positive displacement pump can be used.
