Sewage or effluent consists of faeces and a large amount of water with paper and other items such as wet wipes not designed for flushing. Sewage can be difficult to pump due to the inability to control what sewage contains as pump blockages occur frequently due to saturated fat, wet wipes and other objects entering sewage which can not be handled by pumps.

Downtime can be extensive should sewage pumps become blocked as to access submersible pumps often a confined space entry team is required and in transport applications such as in trains and planes when sewage tanks require emptying if tank emptying is stopped for any reason delays can be expensive. Storage tanks used in properties and equipment which require emptying are also designed with only 1-2 days worth of storage meaning any sewage pumps requiring maintenance only have a short time period to address the situation.
