Main Engines are cooled by two circuits within a vessel. LT or low temperature fresh water is used to cool the engine, and HT or High Temperature Sea water is used to cool water in the Low temperature circuit via a heat exchanger.

Sea Water can not be used in engines as it would require engines to be made from more resistant materials leading to increases in cost but also leave salt deposits within engines. The cooling water is kept within strict parameters to ensure the engine is kept cool when hot, does not experience thermal shock and whilst in port be heated to keep the main engine warm.
