Variable Speed Peristaltic Pump for Transferring Water Based Ink at a Papermill

Boyser AMP 16 peristaltic pump for ink - Front view

Requirement for a Pump to Handle Small, Precise Flow Rates

A Papermill required a pump for transferring water-based ink for their manufacturing process. They needed a reliable pump that could perform small and precise flow rates as well as having the ability to adjust the flow rate if required. This pump is a critical part of their process and any downtime can lead to significant losses in production and high costs. The current pump they were using was failing frequently and this was leading to high spare parts costs and significant amounts of downtime.

The AMP 16 Peristaltic Pump with External Inverter, PTC sensors and Forced Air Cooling

We selected our AMP 16 peristaltic pump with natural rubber hose producing between 16 and 381 l/hr at around half a bar discharge pressure. The motor is rated for use with an external inverter drive, it is fitted with PTC sensors and forced air cooling to enable it to run at low frequencies without risk of overheating. Also fitted to the pump head is a leakage sensor. This is wired to an external control panel on site and warns the operator if the internal rubber hose has burst, they then know that maintenance is required and can have the pump up and running very quickly with little downtime. The leakage sensor is particularly useful for this customer as quite often the pump is unmanned and it can take some time before an engineer discovers a fault.

A peristaltic pump is also excellent for their system as the only part that comes into contact with the fluid is the internal rubber hose. There is no mechanical seal, therefore it can dry run indefinitely without the fear of damaging a sealing system like with other pump types. The rubber hose is also the only main wearing part and therefore maintenance is very simple and low cost. We recommended that this customer keep at least one spare hose and silicone grease in stock at all times to reduce any downtime if the hose does burst or wear.
