North Ridge Pumps supplied a pontoon mounted lagoon water supply pump for a recycling plant aggregate washing system at a UK quarry. The new pump has been installed on site along with a multimillion-pound centrifuge based aggregate recycling and aggregate washing plant. The quarry has reopened to meet increased demand for virgin and recycled aggregates from local builders, developers, large construction contractors and other businesses.

The plant imports construction waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill. This is usually stone and aggregate with large clay and silt content. The aggregate is put through the facilities water treatment process once a mag-belt removes all the ferrous content. The system separates the products with use of a centrifuge, various vibrating screening decks, a power scrub/log wash, cyclones, screeners, and crushers to produce various grades of sand, topsoil, and stone from 50mm, 40mm, 30mm, 20mm, 10mm down. The process includes a water floatation system along with high frequency trash dewatering screens which separate off any polystyrene, wood and plastic trash placing the waste to one side for disposal or further recycling. The product produced is then put back into the marketplace to be used on new construction sites as new build material. The plant can produce 100 tonnes per hour of new useable aggregate.

Vertical immersion pumps, sometimes referred to as column pumps or cantilever pumps are excellent for applications such as this. The pump is mounted at the end of a rigid column that can be manufactured to the desired length depending on the depth of the lagoon, sump or tank. The pump is submerged and continuously flooded with fluid which eliminates the risk of dry running and the need for priming. The motor is situated outside of the fluid to make maintenance far simpler and to eliminate the need to install high IP rated motors.

Our vertical immersion pump is feeding the only water supply for the site from a lagoon with settling ponds over 200m away with over 70m of head required. The water supply pump continuously feeds a 120,000 litre water storage tank locally positioned to the plant. This storage tank is continually emptied over the duration of the day as the cycle continues, using approximately 60,000 litres of water per 12 hour shift.
