How an Industrial Pressure Sprayer Works

What is a pressure sprayer?

A pressure sprayer is a chamber which is filled with a liquid which can be a lubricant, paint or chemical, then filled with compressed air to allow the liquid to be sprayed at pressure.

Units are typically of cast iron or stainless steel design. Cast Iron is used for lubricating liquids, and some weed killers, with stainless steel being used for spraying water based detergents to ensure water does not become discolored from corrosion, and the pumping of chemicals. Flammable liquids must not be used with such equipment.

Units can be fixed with a stand incorporating part of the design or on wheels for portability. 

How does a pressure sprayer work?

A industrial sprayer consists of a tank, safety valve, inlet nozzle and gauge. They are filled first with liquid and although a tank may have a capacity of 10L or higher they are only filled to ¾ of the tanks capacity.

The sprayer is then sealed and an air line connected with the container being pressurized to its design pressure of anywhere between 8-10 bar. A safety valve acts above the design pressure to prevent containers from being over pressurized. Units are fitted with a lance, hose and trigger and once the trigger is activated it allows the pressurized contents to evacuate via the nozzle and lance.

How to pressurize

Industrial designs are filled with compressed air via an airline where as cheaper designs consist of a manual pump which is worked several times to pressurize the air inside the chamber.

Paint of low viscosity such as creosote
Weed Killer
Degreaser for removing grease from mechanical components
Low Viscosity Lubricating liquids for lubricating mechanical parts in hard to reach places
