Urgent Enquiry From a Vessel Owner in Need of a Replacement Seawater Cooling Pump

North Ridge Pumps were contacted by a vessel owner in desperate need of a sea water cooling pump as their current installed pump had failed. The casing, shaft and impeller were badly corroded, meaning it was beyond economical repair.

After discussions with the customer, we were able to obtain the application details of the existing pump, including; the bore of the pipework, pump connection sizes, flow rate, head and power supply.

North Ridge Pumps VXEN Vertical Inline Centrifugal Pump with a 4 Pole Motor for Continuous Use

We selected a pump constructed in bronze from our VXEN range of vertical inline centrifugal pumps. As the pump was used for sea water cooling and would be running continuously, we advised that a 4 pole motor running slower was the best option. By running it slower, the pump components wear slower, meaning the lifespan of the pump is increased. We also selected an inverter drive to be fitted to the motor as this can control the motor speed based on cooling requirements at a specific point in time. As vessels commonly navigate waters at varying temperatures, sometimes pumps are not required to be operated at full capacity when going through colder waters. By operating the pump in this manner, the power absorbed is significantly less and this can lead to big savings in fuel costs.

The selection was subsequently accepted, and the pump was delivered to the vessel in 1 week and installed with no issues. We anticipate that by using the inverter drive to control the motor speed based on flow rate requirements, the customer can easily save in excess of £1200 a year in fuel costs.
