Barrel Pump Kit for Emptying Transformer Oil

Enquiry from an Engineering Company to Transfer oil into 200 Litre Barrels

An engineering company specialising in welding, machining and fabrication approached us requiring a solution for emptying 200 litre barrels of transformer oil. A complete kit with discharge hose and dispensing nozzle was needed and the motor had to be 110V as this was the only power supply available local to the pump. 

Transformer oil is mineral based and mainly utilised in oil filled transformers and other electric equipment such as switchgear and welders as a cooling agent and insulator, it is perfect for this purpose due to its dielectric strength and chemical properties.

Barrel pumps, also referred to as drum pumps, are designed to fit through the tight opening at the top of barrels/drums and are immersed in the fluid. The column is cut to length to reach the bottom of the container, this allows the maximum amount of fluid to be emptied and minimises product wastage. We selected our F 430 AL-41/38 pump with a 1000mm column in aluminium and 110V variable speed FEM 4070 motor for this application. Aluminium is an excellent material option as it is not only chemically compatible with the oil but also more robust than polypropylene and other plastics, most useful for manual handling and regular use in engineering installations such as this. 

As per the customer’s request, we fitted 5 metres of PVC discharge hose and an aluminium nozzle with trigger for safely transferring the transformer oil without spillage. The motor is fitted with a variable speed dial for controlling the flow rate, this combined with the nozzle allows for very accurate control of how much oil is dispensed. 

Our range of drum pumps can be supplied in various materials for compatibility with a wide range of fluids, these include polypropylene, PVDF and stainless steel. Motor options include single phase 230V/110V, three phase electric, cordless battery, and compressed air powered. The column can be cut to varying lengths depending on the size of the container, for example IBCs, 25 litre jerry cans and open top tanks. These are an extremely versatile pumps and the option to switch the motor between different pumps quickly is very economical and a pain free process for operators.
