At North Ridge Pumps we have a wide range of basket strainers types, including completely bespoke HDPE strainers, other materials available are cast iron, bronze, stainless steel and polypropylene, our basket strainers also called pre-filters can be supplied in both vertical and horizontal installations.

Our basket strainers are recommended for applications with solids in suspension, they are fitted on the pumps inlet and therefore work as filter stopping any solids going through the pump and consequently preventing the impeller from clogging. Available in a variety of materials, designs and sizes, we can therefore supply a suitable basket strainer for any domestic or industrial swimming pool pump in both horizontal and vertical installations.

What is a basket strainer and how do I know if my system requires one?

A basket strainer/filter is installed before the pump inlet to stop any unwanted suspended solids entering the pump and causing any possible damage. If you suspect that solids not suitable for your pump may be present in the system, then a basket strainer/filter may be required.

How do I know what mesh size I require for my basket strainer?

The mesh size is dictated by the maximum solids size your pump can handle. Always ensure that the mesh/filter size does not allow the passage of solids that are larger than your pump can handle.

How do I know what basket strainer materials are correct for my application?

Firstly, always check the compatibility of the materials available against the fluid being pumped. It may be that more than one material is suitable for your fluid and selection could be based on the application type. For instance; cast iron, plastic, bronze and stainless steel are all suitable for fresh water. If it is a simple transfer application, then the most cost-effective material cast iron or plastic will be best. However, if it is a sanitary application, then stainless steel or bronze are better choices.
